BERLIN - Select Energy Services, part of Northeast Utilities' (NU) competitive business group, has submitted seven proposals to the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF). As part of its request for proposals issued last fall, CCEF is seeking to fund projects that promote the commercialization of fuel cells and the use of clean and reliable distributed generation in Connecticut.
Select Energy Services filed first-round proposals in two project categories: The first is "Commercial Operation" for the installation of commercially-ready fuel cells at commercial, industrial or institutional sites. CCEF's objective for this category is to present the benefits, feasibility and viability of fuel cells in various customer segments.
The second category is "Operational Demonstration" for projects aimed at establishing a track record of performance for near-commercial fuel cells.
"With Select Energy Services' history as a leading provider of energy-efficiency projects, our team is well-versed in the technology and applications that will drive valuable improvements in Connecticut's energy options," said James B. Redden, president of Select Energy Services. "We are part of three proposed demonstration projects, four commercial operation proposals, and serve as systems integrator in two additional proposals submitted to CCEF last month," he added.
Select Energy Services' fuel-cell projects range in size from ten kilowatts to one megawatt for commercial and institutional sites throughout the state, Redden said.
Select Energy Services worked with two other NU subsidiaries - Select Energy Inc. and the Northeast Generation Services Co. - to develop, install and maintain the Connecticut Juvenile Training School's energy plant in Middletown. Completed in 2001, the CJTS project houses six 200-kilowatt fuel cells and is the world's largest single-site installation.
CCEF is expected to decide by the end of February which project proposals will advance to a second round of review. CCEF has announced plans to dedicate up to $8 million to fund projects submitted under this RFP process, with the announcement of finalists expected in June.
