NEW HAVEN - Ikea received final approval from the city February 19 to build a 300,000-square-foot showroom at Long Wharf behind the Pirelli building, leaving the plan with only one regulatory hurdle to cross. The Swedish home furnishings retailer holds a conditional purchase agreement with Westfield America Corp., owner of the 19-acre parcel at 500 Sargent Drive, under which the land changes hands after state and city officials grant the new store the go-ahead. Ikea now awaits only a storm water discharge permit from the state's Department of Environmental Protection.
Ikea officials say they hope to close on the property by mid-March and to begin construction the following month.
