STORRS - As the state struggles to shake off recession and rebuilds its economy, the service sector is in many respects eclipsing traditional mainstays of the Connecticut economy including finance, insurance and real estate (FIRE) and manufacturing.
In the latest edition of UConn's quarterly review, The Connecticut Economy, Executive Editor Steven Lanza reports that, "Over the recent business cycle, services accounted for the greatest proportion of the variance in total employment (19 percent), trailed by manufacturing (ten percent), FIRE (nine percent) and government. The service sector, not usually considered a key export industry, nevertheless appears to be a significant source of job growth."
