HARTFORD - Attorney General Richard Blumenthal on February 25 testified on behalf of legislation that would end the state's prohibition on local municipalities' regulation of smoking. Blumenthal is urging legislators to repeal a 1993 law that stripped towns of their authority to regulate secondhand smoke.
In testimony before the General Assembly's Public Health Committee, Blumenthal said: "Our state is alone in New England in barring municipalities from taking effective action against secondhand smoke. Restoring this critical home-rule authority to municipalities would not require them to adopt a ban on smoking in restaurants or other public places. It would simply enable and empower them to do so," Blumenthal said.
