STAMFORD - Rail commuters who'd like to receive the latest information on Metro-North service can now register for the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council's free "E-Mail Alert" service. The service was launched two years ago, explains the Commuter Council's Jim Cameron. "The response has been great, especially after the recent blizzard when riders couldn't depend on Metro-North for a straight answer on whether the trains were running." Metro-North disappointed thousands of commuters the day after the blizzard by offering only a fraction of their regular rush hour service with little or no notice to riders. "We got the word out to commuters not to expect trains to be running on Tuesday morning," says Cameron.
At its most recent meeting the Commuter Council called on Metro-North to launch an e-mail alert service to let riders know of any disruptions or changes, just as many media outlets immediately let subscribers know of breaking news. "It seems like such an obvious public service," says Cameron. "But knowing the MTA it will probably take them years to implement. Commuters deserve no less and we're happy to provide this service."
