SAN ANTONIO, Tex. - SBC Communications Inc., parent of SNET, has named former U.S. Commerce Secretary William Daley to the newly created position of president, overseeing regulatory issues as the telecom giant lobbies for legislation that would make it easier for Baby Bells to offer data services.
Daley, who served as secretary of commerce in the Clinton administration between 1997 and 2000, will oversee regulatory and governmental initiatives, as well as strategic planning, external affairs and international affairs.
Daley's appointment, effective December 1, comes as San Antonio, Tex.-based SBC, the No. 2 U.S. local telephone company, pushes for legislation that would scrap a requirement that the Baby Bells open their local networks to rivals before offering long-distance data services. SBC has argued that the requirement raises its costs and adds an unfair burden that cable television companies, which provide competing service, do not face.
Daley is the brother of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and the son of the late Richard Daley, who ran City Hall and a storied old-style political machine for 21 years prior to his death in 1976.
