DERBY - On March 3 the Valley CTWorks center opened a temporary site at TEAM Inc. at 30 Elizabeth Street in Derby. The move stemmed from the February 28 closing of the state Department of Labor's Ansonia office, which housed CTWorks.

"We are determined to keep CTWorks services available for Valley residents," said Joseph M. Carbone, president and CEO of the WorkPlace Inc., which oversees CTWorks centers in the Valley, Bridgeport and Stamford. "Seamless continuity for job-seekers and employers is critical."

Mayors James T. Della Volpe of Ansonia, Marc Garofalo of Derby and Shelton's Mark Lauretti joined Win Oppel of Shelton, a WorkPlace director, and Carbone to announce CTWorks temporary move.

Explained Oppel, president of Ad-Merica in Shelton and a WorkPlace board member representing the Valley: "CTWorks is a lifeline for job-seekers and employers, and our board of directors is committed to keeping it in the Valley."

Last year 2,136 Valley job-seekers used CTWorks for free employment services including job-search assistance and workshops, access to job training, TANF services, computer workshops, résumé preparation and career counseling. About ten percent of the job-seekers were employed at the time they sought services.

Nearly 3,000 people in the Valley are unemployed, according to CTWorks, and more than 100 welfare recipients are required to use the CTWorks center to prepare for and find jobs. In addition, the Valley is home to 20,640 low-wage workers needing added education and training available through CTWorks.

Over the past 12 months employers posted 971 job openings with CTWorks in the Valley. Free services for employers include recruitment, job postings and outplacement.

"We did not want to leave a labor force of more than 45,000 people and nearly 4,000 businesses without services," said Scott Wilderman, executive director of Career Resources Inc., which operates CTWorks.

The WorkPlace will begin a public, competitive search for a permanent Valley location to open by July.

CTWorks centers in the Valley, Bridgeport and Stamford are overseen by the WorkPlace Inc., southwestern Connecticut's Regional Workforce Development Board, and operated by Career Resources Inc.
