NEW HAVEN - A new book by a Yale physician, The Yale Guide to Women's Reproductive Health, From Menarche to Menopause, is intended to answer questions that patients and doctors often do not have the time to address in routine appointments.
"Over the last ten years, with the HMO-ization of medicine, if you get five minutes with your doctor you're lucky," says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Yale School of Medicine. "Many women's health issues can't be discussed in five minutes. This book gives women some background information."
Minkin, who co-authored the book with Carol Wright, said many of the existing health-related books for women are either too medical or not technical enough. Her book, which will be published in May by Yale University Press, is intended for an intelligent, reasonably educated woman who is motivated to stay as healthy as possible. The volume will cover women's health issues from the teen years to the onset of menopause, including topics such as contraceptive choices, sexually transmitted diseases, abortion, miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, and cervical, ovarian and endometrial cancer.
