WEST HAVEN - The principal of a portable garage manufacturer, already under investigation by state officials for allegedly failing to pay a fine for illegal dumping and other environmental violations, may be the subject of a new investigation by the state's Department of Labor (DOL) for failing to pay back wages, overtime and vacation time.
According to published reports, employees of Cover-It Inc. reported to the DOL that on March 21 owner Brian Goldwitz issued pink slips to employees dated a week earlier. The same workers said a memo sent to Cover-It's 125 workers said they would not receive payment for accrued sick, personal or vacation time. The same employees, said Goldwitz offered to rehire them to work at another company, North American Outdoor Products, at the same address as Cover-It, 17 Wood Street. They also said Goldwitz is dissolving Cover-It's 401(k) program.
In 2002 Cover-It was fined $757,200 for illegal dumping and related violations at its former facility on Wood Street. State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said his office seized $40,000 from the company in December and is pursuing the remainder of the levy.
