Business-Arts Connection Subject of Forum

BNH will announce ad grants program at May 20 event

Business New Haven

By: BNH

NEW HAVEN - The developing relationship between business and the arts will be the subject of a lively community roundtable May 20 "Business & The Arts," from 3-5 p.m. at the Olde Blue restaurant, 1157 Chapel Street, New Haven.

Business, arts and economic development leaders will participate in an open forum designed to help expand understanding of the greater New Haven arts community and the role it plays in regional business development and in the potential impact on individual companies.

The forum is being presented by Business New Haven and its online identity, Conntact.com.

"New Haven markets itself as the state's cultural capital," explains Business New Haven Editor Michael C. Bingham. "But few if any of the region's major cultural institutions can support themselves without the generosity of the business community.

"Now, at a time when businesses are cutting back on everything - from charitable giving to employee head count - that financial lifeline is under greater stress than ever before," adds Bingham. "That's why it's vital that members of the business and arts communities better understand each other and work together to the long-term benefit of both."

"It's particularly important to economic development that New Haven's diverse arts base continues to expand," adds BNH Publisher Mitchell Young. "We're hoping to facilitate a better understanding of the role of some of New Haven's highest-quality but smaller arts groups as well as the major organizations. We need to think of arts development like venture capitalists think about new companies: A little money early, can have a great impact down the road.

"To that end we will be announcing at the forum an advertising development grant program for small and emerging arts organizations to aid their business development efforts," says Young. "There are no matching funds required. This is not a promotional sales effort. We're hoping this will help these arts groups leverage the exposure and gain support for their projects from other small and mid-sized companies as well as the corporate sector."

The May 20 event will feature corporate and small-business decision-makers, representative of arts organizations and individual artists, the live panel-discussion-format event will explore issues including:
o The financial impact of the arts on
New Haven
o Building support for artists and arts
organizations in the region.
o Is there a bottom-line value to arts
sponsorships?
o Can the cultural community survive "economic development"?
A reception will follow the 90-minute discussion. Tickets to this live event (seating is limited) are $7 in advance. Call 781-3480, ext. 204, or e-mail arts@conntact.com.
