University of New Haven (UNH) professor and attorney Mario Gaboury has been elected to chair the executive committee of the newly established American Society of Victimology. Director of the UNH Study Center for Crime Victims' Rights, Remedies & Resources, Goboury is also an associate professor of criminal justice in the UNH School of Public Safety and Professional Studies. In the 1980s, Goboury was deputy director of the U.S. Justice Department's Office for Victims of Crime. Goboury earned his doctorate in human development and family studies from Penn State and a law degree from Georgetown University.

Janice D. Lai, partner in the product liability practice group of Halloran & Sage, LLP, has been elected by the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association (CDLA) to a three-year term as Defense Research Institute (DRI) state representative for Connecticut. Lai will serve as liaison between DRI and CDLA and will help coordinate and promote national seminars on leading issues of interest. Her role will also include creating awareness among CDLA members of resources that DRI offers to defense attorneys. An expert-witness database, publications and articles on cutting edge issues are among these resources. Currently, Lai is a member of DRI, the steering committee and is chair of the Membership Committee for the Young Lawyers section. Lai is also the associate editor of The Defense, CDLA's quarterly publication.

The U.S. Baird Corp. has promoted West Havener Duncan Stewart to vice president of international sales at the company's Stratford facility. Stewart has more than 30 years of marketing, engineering and international sales experience in the machine tool industry and was a general sales manager at Baird before his promotion. Stewart previously held positions as vice president of international sales for G&L in Wisconsin and was the director of international sales for Kingsbury Corp. in New Hampshire.

Mark Gorman, M.D. has been appointed director of the Acute Brain Injury/Stroke Program at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Gorman will head a coordinated multidisciplinary stroke team aimed at diagnosing and treating stroke patients as rapidly as possible. This team is comprised of three emergency department physicians, three neurologists, two nurses and a physician's assistant. Gorman will also concentrate on patient education. An assistant professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the Yale School of Medicine, Gorman is also director of the Yale Neurosonology Laboratory.

Branford resident Robert LaTorraca has been named chairman of the 2003 American Heart Association Greater New Haven American Heart Walk. LaTorraca will oversee all recruitment and organizational activities of the event, which steps off at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven on Sunday, May 18. LaTorraca is chief executive officer for the east region of American Medical Response in New Haven.

The Henry Luce Foundation has approved $170,000 grant to the Yale University Art Gallery for Patricia E. Kane, the Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts. The grant will allow Kane to take a year-long sabbatical to pursue research for a study of early Rhode Island furniture-making. The basis for the project is the documentary research, particularly in the Rhode Island Judicial Archives, which reveals information about the occupations and concerns of early Rhode Island residents. Joining Yale's American decorative arts curatorial staff in 1968, Kane was appointed curator in 1978 and was recently endowed by the Friends of American Arts at Yale. Kane earned her Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University in 1987.

Anna Hammond has been appointed deputy director for programs and external affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. Hammond will oversee the departments of museum education, public information, graphic design and programs. Hammond was the director of writing services at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where she led the group that produced MoMA Magazine. She was also a project editor at Harry N. Abrams Inc. Hammond earned her classical art and archeology degrees from the University of Michigan and her MFA in painting and drawing from Hunter College in New York.

Christopher O'Connor has been named a diplomate in the American College of Healthcare Executives. In addition to leadership in health and community affairs, diplomate status is achieved by passing the Board of Governors examination in health-care management. Currently vice president of clinical operations for the Saint Raphael Healthcare System, O'Connor oversees administration of a number of departments including surgery and emergency medicine.

Middletown software development firm Pinnacle Decision Systems has hired Jonathan Lincoln of Mystic as solution developer. A former quality assurance software engineer in Rhode Island, Lincoln earned his B.S. from Brown University.

Michael T. Meehan of Fairfield has been named partner at Meehan, Meehan & Gavin. Since joining the firm in 1996, Meehan has represented clients in civil and criminal litigation. Meehan is a member of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association as well as the Connecticut and Bridgeport Bar Associations.

Chapel Haven Inc. has named Sherry L. Robitaille supervisor of residential life skills, overseeing a 29-bed, 24-hour residential facility. Robitaille comes to Chapel Haven from Datahr Rehabilitation Institute in Brookfield, where she served as a residential coordinator. She is a graduate of Western Connecticut State University.

Max Sabrin, former managing partner of the AMESgroup in New York, has been named a senior consultant for Dunhill Professional Search of New London.

Liquid Plastics Inc. of Middletown has appointed Calvin Borg technical services specialist. He will be responsible for field technical support for sales in the Northeast, as well as setting up the training facility which will train contractors in applying Liquid Plastics' products. Previously Borg was a project manager for Eastern Coating and Keeler & Long.

Deep River resident John R. Goncalo, CSI, CCCA has become an associate of the S/L/A/M Collaborative. As construction administrator, Goncalo has provided leadership in office-wide training, management, standards and quality control. The S/L/A/M Collaborative is an architecture, engineering and planning firm.

Dmitriy Gitelman has been hired as solution developer for Pinnacle Decision Systems in Middletown. Gitelman will help the company develop and implement business automation solutions for clients in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts. Gitelman is a Microsoft Certified Professional.

New Haven marketing company Caffeine has hired Fred Roca as Web designer. A former graphic designer for siteshell.com, Roca will be responsible for the layout and development of Caffeine's client sites including Bic Corp. and Bradley International Airport.

The law firm of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy P.C, has named Barbara A Frederick chairman of its appellate practice group. Previously Frederick served as law clerk and executive assistant to Chief Justice Robert Callahan of the Connecticut Supreme Court. Frederick serves as an adjunct instructor in the UConn School of Law's Moot Court program.

Barker Specialty Advertising Co. of Cheshire has named Bridget-Ann Kingsbury director of marketing, Heather Shaw as fulfillment program coordinator, Amanda Wright as government sales coordinator, Candace Unnerstall as awards sales coordinator, and Ewa Cybulski as executive sales coordinator.
