NEW HAVEN - The Connecticut Clean Cars Alliance (CCCA), a coalition of environmental groups including the Connecticut Fund for the Environment and ConnPIRG, is launching a campaign to reduce pollution in the state with passage of tougher new auto emissions standards similar to those in New York, Massachusetts and California.
Connecticut's air quality has received a grade of F from the American Lung Association. Already, 260,000 state residents suffer from asthma and related conditions associated with air pollution, according to the CCCA. Connecticut also has a high rate of heart attacks, which studies show increase when people breathe more pollution from cars and trucks.
New York and Massachusetts have followed California's lead by adopting more stringent emissions standards for new cars, dramatically reducing the amount of pollution they emit. The CCCA says it hopes to introduce a bill in the 2004 General Assembly session requiring that all new cars sold in Connecticut beginning in 2006 meet the same new emissions standards. Automakers can already meet and exceed stricter emissions standards, reduce pollution and cut global warming pollutants from even the largest cars, SUVs, pickups and minivans without affecting vehicle size, safety or performance, the CCCA says.
