NEW HAVEN - Regular exercise such as vigorous walking reduces total and intra-abdominal body fat among overweight post-menopausal females, according to a study by a Yale researcher. According to lead author Melinda Irwin, assistant professor of epidemiology and public health at the Yale School of Medicine, "Previously sedentary post-menopausal women who exercised for more than 195 minutes per week lost 6.9 percent of intra-abdominal body fat and maintained their energy intake during the 12-month study, compared with less significant losses and even gains among women in the control group," Irwin said,
New Model for Senior Living
SHELTON - United Methodist Homes, in concert with the international Planetree program, has undertaken the development of a new, innovative model of senior living services. The model focuses on relationships among residents, staff, family members and the community that support independence, dignity and well-being. Planetree, a non-profit headquartered at Griffin Hospital in Derby, is dedicated to demystifying, humanizing and personalizing health care for patients and their families. The development of the new senior living model will focus on Wesley Village, a senior community in Shelton. The model will incorporate elements of the Planetree program appropriate to long-term care, as distinct from acute hospital care.
