Amtrak ridership between New Haven and Springfield, Mass. has soared by 38 percent in just two months. On April 15 Amtrak reduced fares and added five trains daily on the route, for a total of 16. In the six weeks leading up to the change, average weekly ridership was 5,759 passengers; in the seven weeks since, that figure was 7,962. Amtrak made the changes after it discovered that current staffing and schedules could be realigned to increase service without increasing costs.
