Signian McGeary of Cheshire was named a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association. An assistant professor of occupational therapy in the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac University, McGeary was cited for her contributions to occupational therapy, including lecturing at hospitals in China and Beijing University. She has also brought students to Costa Rica and England to visit rehabilitation settings and meet physically challenged patients. McGeary earned her master's degree in adult learning theory from Southern Connecticut State University.

Jeffrey P. Koplan, M.D. will join the Yale Corporation for a six-year term as alumni fellow. Koplan is vice president for academic health affairs at Emory University and former director of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). Koplan served as the first director of the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention & Health Promotion. He also served as assistant surgeon general and was president of the Prudential Insurance Co.'s Center for Health Care Research. Koplan's current position is chief academic and research officer at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, with responsibility for Emory's schools of medicine, nursing and public health and the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, which focuses on vaccines for AIDS and malaria.

Former Yale Professor F. Herbert Bormann will receive the international environmental Blue Planet Prize in October from the Japanese Asahi Glass Foundation in Tokyo. The prize is awarded annually to two individuals or organizations that have made major contributions to the conservation of the global environment.

Joseph A. Zaccagnino, president and CEO of Yale-New Haven Hospital and its parent system Yale New Haven Health, was sworn in as chairman of the National Committee for Quality Health Care (NCQHC). Zaccagnino will lead the board of trustees of the non-profit organization, which is dedicated to enhancing the quality of health care in the U.S. Zaccagnino has been in health care for 33 years. He serves on the board of VHA Inc., the Healthcare Research & Development Institute, the American Hospital Association Health System Governing Council and the Healthcare Executives Study Society.

Gaylord Hospital awarded Wallingford resident Gloria Stowell, RN the Joseph A. Lindenmayer Employee of the Year Award. Stowell is a staff facilitator for the Stroke Support Group, a diabetic and hypertension educator and an Acquired Brain Injury specialist. She is the first RN to receive the award, which recognizes a hospital employee who exemplifies outstanding performance. Patients and their families who have been discharged within the calendar year nominate the recipient.

Wallingford resident Dominic R. Yoia received the P. Jerome Cunningham Award from the Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators (CAPFAA). Yoia is senior director of financial aid at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. Previously Yoia was director of financial aid at the University of Bridgeport. The award is given annually in memory of Cunningham, who founded CAPFAA in 1969.

New Havener Alice M. Forrester, Ph.D. was appointed associate executive director of the Clifford Beers Clinic (CBC). Forrester is responsible for the clinic's outpatient services. She has worked at the clinic for six years and has coordinated CBC's Family Violence Treatment Program. She is co-chair of the New Haven Domestic Violence Task Force sub-committee on "Children Affected by Domestic Violence." Forrester earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Fielding Graduate Institute.

Advertising and marketing agency Martino & Binzer has appointed Wallingford resident Christopher Capot vice president of public relations. Capot is responsible for taking the agency's PR business into new markets and increasing the depth of its resources. He has a background in corporate communications, financial services, technology and journalism in Connecticut and New York, and has headed up internal communications for a global division of JPMorgan Chase in New Jersey.

New Haven-area recipients of the Connecticut Director's Credential were awarded in May at the state Capitol in Hartford. Recipients include Sandra Lekas, East Haven; Betty Baisden, Hamden; Carla Horwitz, New Haven; Jody Platner, New Haven; Donna Bella, Madison; Cynthia Olson, Guilford; and Valerie Villano of New Haven. The credential, created through a collaboration among Charter Oak State College, the state Department of Social Services, Connecticut Charts-A-Course and the Hartford Area Child Care Collaborative, recognizes knowledge acquired by administrators working within the early child care/education community.

Cynthia Lord, M.H.S., PA-C of Cheshire has been elected to the board of directors of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). She is program director and assistant professor at the Quinnipiac University Physician Assistant Program. She will serve a two-year term as director-at-large. Lord is the AAPA graduate advisor to the Student Academy of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and has received awards including the Connecticut Kidney Foundation Award and Connecticut Academy of Physicians Assistants President's Award.

Computer Resolutions Inc., a supplier of computer products and services in Bridgeport, has hired George Louzek as vice president, business development. Lousek will market IT solutions that focus on enterprise server and storage consolidation in New England. Louzek previously worked as director, channel sales and field marketing for Auspex Systems Inc. in Santa Clara, Calif.

Michael M. Ciaburri, president and chief operating officer of the Bank of Southern Connecticut, has been appointed the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation recruitment chairman for its annual fundraising "Walk to Cure Diabetes," an ongoing series of walks starting in September.

Debra Toupence was named director of the Connecticut chapter of the March of Dimes. Previously she was executive director of the American Heart Association of Western Massachusetts.

Milford Bank appointed Ronald Silverberg of Bethany to director of commercial business development. He will be responsible for establishing and enhancing business relationships in Milford Bank's primary market area. Silverberg has more than 25 years of commercial banking experience and most recently managed the Community Lending Department of American Savings Bank in New Britain.

OR&L Construction has named Constantine Vlachos project engineer. Vlachos performs design review on all OR&L projects, participates in value engineering initiatives and acts as field engineer overseeing field logistics. Previously he owned and operated V&E Consulting, an architectural design service company in New York. Vlachos earned his B.S. in architecture from the New York Institute of Technology.
