Jeffrey Klaus has been named senior vice president and market manager for mid-Connecticut in the Business Financial Services unit of FleetBoston Financial in New Haven. Heading a team of 12, Klaus is responsible for providing financial services to businesses with $2 million to $1 billion in annual sales.
Cynthia M. Gallatin has been promoted from executive director to dean of Quinnipiac University Online. Gallatin has been an adjunct marketing professor in the School of Business at Quinnipiac since 1994.
Milford Bank has appointed Ronald Silverberg of Bethany to director of commercial business development. He will be responsible for establishing and enhancing business relationships in Milford Banks primary market area. Silverberg has more than 25 years of commercial banking experience and most recently managed the community lending department of American Savings Bank in New Britain.
Subway International in Milford has named Madison resident Kevin Kane the companys new public relations manager. Kane will oversee media relations in corporate and product publicity, special events and crisis communication. Kane was public relations director for Brad4d Inc., an advertising and public relations firm in New Haven, and worked as a reporter for the Connecticut Post and New Haven Register.
William R. Stark has joined United International Corp. of Wallingford as administrator and vice president. He is responsible for overseeing the firms operations. Stark worked for the states Department of Transportation for 34 years. His most recent position was managing all DOT bridge designs completed by consulting engineers.
Debra Toupence has been named director of the Connecticut chapter of the March of Dimes. Previously she was executive director of the American Heart Association of Western Massachusetts.
Stephen Allegretto, administrative director of finance for Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNNH) and a 17-year veteran of the hospital, has been named vice president of financial planning for the Yale-New Haven Health System. Allegretto will be responsible for integrating the budget, financial planning and decision-support functions for the systems three hospitals in New Haven, Bridgeport and Greenwich. He is a certified public accountant and an instructor at the Yale School of Medicine in its epidemiology and public health program.
The Connecticut Hospital Association has elected five trustees: Judith A. Carey, RSM, Ph.D., board member of Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center; the Rev. Monsignor James G. Coleman, board member of Saint Marys Hospital; Thomas P. Pipicelli, president and chief executive officer of the William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich; Linda Berger Spivack, vice president of patient care services at Meridens MidState Medical Center; and Steven L. Strongwater, M.D., hospital director of John Dempsey Hospital in Farmington.
The Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants (CSCPA) has elected John L. Evanich Jr. of Wallingford and Woodbrige resident William R. Sloman II to its board of governors. Evanich, the groups immediate past president, will serve a one-year term, and Sloman a three-year term, on the 17-member board.
Alfred N. Kovalik, PE, LEP has been installed as president of the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers (CSPE). Kovalik is an associate with Leggette, Brashears & Graham Inc., an environmental engineering services and groundwater consulting firm in Trumbull. He is a licensed professional engineer in six states, a licensed environmental professional in Conn. and serves as president of GroundWorks Bridgeport. CSPE is a state chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers and represents more than 500 licensed professional engineers.
Pamela H. Palmer has joined Hilb, Rogal & Hamilton Co. of Connecticut, LLC as assistant vice president of employee-benefit programs. She will work at the companys Hamden and Hartford locations and be responsible for managing all aspects of employee benefits service operations in the state. Palmer has 24 years of experience with employee-benefits programs.
OR&L Construction has named Constantine Vlachos project engineer. Vlachos performs design review on all OR&L projects, participates in value engineering initiatives and acts as field engineer overseeing field logistics. Previously he owned and operated V&E Consulting, an architectural design service company in New York. Vlachos earned his B.S. in architecture from the New York Institute of Technology.
Joseph E. Craft, M.D. has been named chair of the scientific advisory board of the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR). Craft is a professor of medicine, chief of rheumatology and professor of immunobiology at the Yale School of Medicine. Craft will oversee ALRs scientific advisory committee, help establish and monitor scientific goals and guide the planning of ALRs annual scientific meeting and summit.
Susanne Olsen Iovino has joined William Orange Realty of Woodbridge. Iovino has experience in managing projects in U.S operations and with VIP relocations in both the U.S and abroad.
Future Directives, LLC of Cheshire has hired Nancy Young as human resources consultant. Young has more than ten years experience as a human resource generalist, performing duties such as performance management, compensation and benefits, HR regulatory compliance, workforce and employment planning and employee training and development.
The Greater New Haven Sports Commission has named Jerry Nelson, general manager of Connecticut SportsPlex in North Branford, its chairman. Also, Al Carbone, marketing communications specialist at the United Illuminating Co., has been named vice chairman of the commission.
The Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association has elected: Kathleen Nastri of Cheshire, president; Richard L. Newman of Bridgeport, president-elect; Ernest F. Teitell of Bridgeport, vice president; Carl D. Anderson of Norwich, treasurer; New Havener Joseph R. Mirrione, secretary; and Mary Ann Connors of Bridgeport as parliamentarian. Elected governors are Shelly L. Graves of New London and David T. Ryan of Hartford.
Laurie Kendall-Ellis, PT, president of Allied Health & Rehabilitation (AHR), has accepted a two-year term as board member for the West Haven Community House. Kendall-Ellis is a licensed physical therapist, an affiliate of the American Physical Therapy Assoc. and represents AHR in the West Haven Rotary Club.
Antonio Ponvert III has been named partner at Koskoff, Koskoff & Beider, PC. Ponvert has been the lead attorney in nationwide class actions including representation of smoking-injured Medicaid recipients and civil-rights litigation in state and federal courts. His practice is focused on individual and class-action litigation, constitutional law, civil rights, public benefits, criminal trials and appeals. He joined the firm in 1999.

The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce (GNHCC) has named Miriam Esther Menacherry of Orange, Eric M. Van Winkle of Branford and Ashley Hayes of New Haven as winners of its annual scholarships. GNHCC awards $1,000 to area youths that plan to pursue a business course of study at an accredited college or university.
