WATERBURY Metro-North train service between Bridgeport and Waterbury may be in jeopardy under a plan by the states Department of Transportation (DOT). Beginning in the middle of next month, all train service on the branch will cease for 45 days due to electrical work in Devon, where the Waterbury branch line joins the main tracks of the New Haven division. Buses will be substituted for trains during this time. When work is completed in early November, only morning and afternoon peak rush-hour trains will resume operations, with two mid-day trains being permanently replaced with bus service.
"This is a dangerous precedent," says Rodney Chabot, president of the Waterbury-based Commuter Council. "In the name of alleged cost savings, Valley residents will be receiving inferior service. After the July fare increase of 15 percent, they deserve better." Chabots group is requesting ridership data from Metro-North so it can analyze trends in passenger service over the past decade. It is also working with commuters, organizing a petition campaign to stop the bus swap.
