MERIDEN One of the Silver Citys top taxpayers is now a tax delinquent, putting a nearly $3 million hole in this years budget, according to Meriden officials.
Minnesota-based NRG Energy, the company responsible for the half-built power plant in Meridens North End, has failed to make the second in a series of 32 annual payments due the city according to a special $111 million plan negotiated with the power broker.
Due July 31 but still unpaid at press time (August 27), the missing payment leaves the city without either the expected revenue or the 808 acres of land promised as a condition of the state permit that allows for the plants construction. "As far as Im concerned, its simple," Mayor Mark D. Benigni told the Record-Journal. "Either they make the payment, or the deal is off."
