Lt. Gov. M. Jodi Rell and officials from the states Department of Labor announced on August 22 a new program to speed up the registration of apprentices for more than two dozen skilled trade groups, including electricians, plumbers and auto mechanics.
Using a new self-registration system, an employer can log onto the Department of Labor Web site, download an apprentice application and sends in the completed form, which is processed within five business days. The new system is supposed to make it easier for the approximately 3,000 Connecticut companies participating in the apprenticeship program run by the DOLs Office of Apprenticeship Training.
"The new self-registration system will streamline our current system, increase efficiency and enable new apprentices to begin work sooner," Rell said. In order to be licensed in the state of Connecticut, most skilled tradespeople must register and complete an apprenticeship. The program is designed to provide training where an apprentice works closely with a mentor to receive a combination of supervised, on-the-job experience and classroom training.
Under the previous apprenticeship registration system, companies were required to contact the Department of Labor to schedule appointments that included on-site meetings and registration sessions.
Roughly 16,000 apprentices are registered under the states apprenticeship program, according to the DOL.
