The New Haven Manufacturers Association (NHMS) has scheduled its Manufacturing Works Action Summit II for 8 to 10 a.m. September 18 at the University of New Haven. Staff from the United Illuminating Co. will facilitate the event.
Julys Manufacturing Works Summit I was organized to collectively define issues local manufacturers felt were of greatest importance to ensure the survival of Connecticut manufacturing in the 21st century. More than 85 people representing manufacturing companies and support businesses attended the meeting, and some 55 issues were generated for prioritization (BNH, July 21).
Action Summit II is designed to set strategies and coordinate specific action steps to address the highest priority issues voted on at Julys summit. The top five issues identified were: effects of global competition on local manufacturing; costs of doing business in Connecticut; potential tax-relief measures or incentives to purchase manufacturing equipment; rising health-care costs; and creating a level playing field with China, which over just a decade has become the low-cost manufacturing center of the world.
Issues were also grouped into categories as an additional prioritization. The top five groups were: state costs and government issues; federal government issues; state policy and education issues; employee benefit cost issues; and manufacturing issues.
