Your question to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano ("DeStefano on Downtown," BNH, August 18) that included the phrase, "Theres no more SNET," needs clarification.
If you meant to say that we are now a part of SBC Communications, and that our corporate headquarters is in New Haven while our parent companys headquarters is in San Antonio, I would have no debate. But we are certainly here - and here to stay.
We became a part of SBC Communications Inc. in 1998. That is, we are now part of a Fortune 30 company that has been named as [Fortune] magazines most-admired telecommunications company for the fourth consecutive year and the seventh time in the past eight years.
And while were proud to be a part of a larger national company, our commitment to New Haven and Connecticut remains as strong as ever. Consider the following: o In the last five years, weve donated more than $4 million to organizations and causes within New Haven - not to mention the millions more weve spent throughout the state;
o Ann Rotatori, SBC SNET vice president of business sales, volunteers numerous hours as chairperson of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. Countless other employees give of their time and energy to worthwhile charitable and civic causes throughout the area and the state;
o Since our merger, weve made more than $150 million in capital investments in the telecommunications network of greater New Haven;
o Our corporate gift along with the generosity of our employees marks us as one of the largest supporters of the greater New Haven United Way.
Pretty substantial for a company that "is no more," dont you think? As we like to say, "We Live Here, We Work Here," and nothing is going to change or lessen our commitment to New Haven or Connecticut.
- John Emra Executive Director SBC SNET External Affairs New Haven
