NEW HAVEN - A $1.34 million grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund will pay for installation of the citys first fuel cell at the Water Pollution Control Authoritys wastewater treatment plant on the East Shore. The 200-kilowatt fuel cell will produce some ten to 15 percent of the plants electricity and reduce energy costs by almost $13,000 a year, officials say.
Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that produce "greener" energy than conventionally generated power because they do not use fossil fuels. IN the cells, hydrogen and oxygen combine to produce electricity, water and heat while emitting as a by-product small traces of carbon dioxide. New Haven is one of nine locations statewide selected by the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund for a ten-year fuel cell pilot program.
