NEW HAVEN - A group of area business leaders met August 20 with US Airways Director of Route Planning Jason Reisinger to explore ways to increase service at Tweed-New Haven Airport. In the weeks leading up to the meeting, US Airways reduced fares on flights departing from Tweed to make them more competitive with other regional airports. Area business leaders have been asked to respond by increasing the number of flights they book from the Elm City aerodrome. Reisinger said that leisure fares from New Haven, booked two to three weeks in advance to Top 25 destinations, are now competitive with flights from Hartford. Business fares booked a week in advance to the same destinations cost slightly more than equivalent Bradley flights but are competitive when savings in travel time and convenience are factored in, he said.
Meanwhile, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. has challenged local businesses to make greater use of Tweed. For example, according to the Yale Daily News, Tweed handled just three to five percent of Yale Travel Services flights over the last year.
