NEW HAVEN - The New Haven Preservation Trust honored Joel Schiavone with its "2003 Preservation Hero" Award September 9 at Lighthouse Point Carousel (after this edition of BNH went to press).
According to Preservation Trust President C. Michael Tucker, the Preservation Hero Award honors an individual or group who has "significantly contributed to the preservation of the distinctive character of the city of New Haven."
Schiavone was cited for his pioneering preservation efforts in renovating the College/Chapel business and entertainment district, a key milestone in the revitalization of downtown.
In the 1980s, according to the Preservation Trust, Schiavone served as a catalyst in the renovation of many historic buildings on the southwest corner of the New Haven Green, including structures that today house boutiques, restaurants and apartments. In doing so, Schiavone earned the sobriquet "Mr. Downtown."
More recently Schiavone has worked to renovate homes in the Fair Haven Heights neighborhood he now calls home along the banks of the Quinnipiac River. With his daughters Schiavone has purchased 14 buildings that are presently undergoing renovation.
Schiavone, a Republican, also ran for mayor of New Haven in 2001. Previous winners of the Preservation Hero Award include former Municipal Historian Richard C. Hegel, C. Newton Schenck, Drew S. Days III, Henry H. Townshend Jr., Anne Tyler Calabresi and Julia S. McNamara.
