Mainstreet development conference comes to New Haven

Connecticuts annual commercial district revitalization conference, Main Street Solutions, will take place on Thursday, October 23 at the Omni New Haven Hotel. Presented by the Connecticut Main Street Center (CMSC) and the Community Economic Development Fund (CEDF), the day-long event will focus on tools and strategies that lead to action-oriented, comprehensive revitalization programs that work in traditional downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts throughout the state.
Last years conference at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in Cromwell attracted more than 260 attendees.
"This is a joint venture between [CMSC] and [CEDF] focused on commercial district revitalization," explains John Simone, the CMSCs executive director. "We want to make people aware of what commercial district revitalization is about and to educate participants by providing opportunities to hear from local and national experts."
Featuring 15 educational sessions, the conference will cover topics including: "Great Businesses Make Great Streets," "Unleashing the Entrepreneurial Spirit," Community Partnerships Fight Crime," "Downtown Housing," "How To Attract the Best Developers," "Funding Your Revitalization Organization," "Attracting Cultural Heritage Tourists," "Preservation Tools," and "A Mayors Roundtable."
Attendees will have a choice of five walking tours in downtown New Haven or nearby neighborhoods and include receptions in local hotspots. Walking tour topics include: "Creative People Making Creative Settings," "Attracting Specialty Retail to Make Your District Unique," and " How Entertainment Venues Can Work Together to Make a Downtown a 24-Hour Destination."
Featured New Haven neighborhoods include Ninth Square, Chapel Street, College Street, the New Haven Green, Yale University and more.
"[We chose] New Haven for the conference because we were looking for a place where commercial district revitalization is going on," said Simone, "New Haven is a great place for that."
A keynote luncheon will feature New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who is also president of the National League of Cities.
