Worry — Don’t Be Happy

New Haven County residents most concerned about economy, says poll

NEW HAVEN — Residents of New Haven County are more concerned about the economy than residents in any other part of Connecticut, according to a poll commissioned by Community Health Charities of Connecticut and released September 16
.
The health charity federation, which began its annual workplace giving campaign on that date, commissioned the University of Connecticut’s Center for Survey Research & Analysis to poll full-time employees about their overall health and well-being during a time of economic and international instability.
The poll of 502 people statewide was conducted in June, shortly after President Bush announced the end of major combat in Iraq.

Among the questions posed to participants was whether they worry about the economy every day, a few times a week, a few times a month or never. Sixty-eight percent of New Haven County residents said they worry about the economy a few times a week, compared to 56 percent from Hartford County and 65 percent from Fairfield County.

"A person’s health can be affected by disease, stress over the economy or the turmoil of world affairs," said Kevin Canavan, president of Community Health Charities of Connecticut. "Community Health Charities of Connecticut used the poll to identify the level of that stress. It’s just one health issue addressed by the 37 member charities that make up our membership."

New Haven County residents are slightly less worried about world affairs in comparison to Fairfield County residents — perhaps because the latter are more likely to work for companies with a global presence. The UConn survey found that full-time employees who live in New Haven County were second to Fairfield County in their concern about world affairs. Sixty-three percent of the participants from New Haven County said they were worried, while 66 percent of the full-time employees who participated in the poll from Fairfield County and 60 percent from Hartford County expressed concern.

Similarly, New Haven County residents also came in second to those from Fairfield County when asked if they think their employers are doing a good job addressing world affairs and economic concerns. Fifty percent from New Haven County said yes, compared to 54 percent from Fairfield County and 46 percent from Hartford County.

"Stress over the economy, world affairs or anything else only exacerbates the health of someone afflicted with a disease. We need to minimize these concerns so we can concentrate on treating and eliminating disease through medical research," said Canavan.

The Center for Survey Research and Analysis (CSRA) at the University of Connecticut is a non-partisan, non-profit survey research facility dedicated to the study of public opinion. CSRA projects ranges from national studies of public opinion and public policy to local community-based surveys.
