In 1974 the first Ronald McDonald House opened in Philadelphia. Fred Hill, a Philadelphia Eagles football player, and his wife spent most of their time at the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHP) while their daughter, Kim, underwent treatment for leukemia. The Hills felt that some of the institutions did not provide adequate accommodations for families of sick children.
Hill was introduced to Audrey Evans, a CHP pediatric oncologist who sought to provide a "home away from home" for families such as the Hills. The local McDonalds franchise and Hills teammates raised funds to purchase the first Ronald McDonald House.
The house was named because of the support of the McDonalds franchise and also for the "positive and hopeful feelings this well-known clown could inspire in children."
