Stephen M. Johnson has been named vice president of development and communications at the Glacier Society in Stratford. He is the former president of AmeriCares. Johnson will be responsible for the society’s development, marketing, communications and public relations functions. He will also direct the group’s educational, research and medical efforts. The Glacier Society’s’ mission is restoring the USS/USCGC Glacier, once the country’s largest icebreaking ship.

State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier has been elected secretary/treasurer of the National Association of State Treasurers and a member of its executive committee. Elected by her colleagues, Nappier’s two-year term will begin December 1.

Gov. John G. Rowland has appointed Clarence L. Roberts to a four-year term as chairman of the State’s Investment Advisory Council (IAC). Roberts has worked for Unilever United States Inc., Lever Bros. Co., General Dynamics Corp. and Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. He is also a member of the board of assessment appeals in the town of Sharon and treasurer of the Sharon Historical Society. IAC was created to advise the state treasurer regarding investment policies. It has the authority to review investments and investment services contracts and IAC approval is required for certain investments.

Joseph Andreana, executive director of the Oxford Economic Development Corp., has been named to head the 2003-04 Valley United Way Community Fundraising Campaign. Andreana has managerial experience with GTE Service Corp., SNET and AT&T. Adreana was the 2001 recipient of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce’s Gold Seal Award, is a director of the Boys & Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley and a member of the Valley Advisory Committee for the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.
Albertus Magnus College has named Joan Venditto director of education programs and associate professor of education. She will oversee implementation of the college’s initiative to reenter the academic field of teacher preparation. Venditto has been an adjunct faculty member of AMC, Southern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut, was English coordinator of Daniel Hand High School and principal and president of Our Lady of Mercy in Madison.

Skanska USA Building Inc. in Milford has named Robert Collie senior vice president, managing Connecticut operations for the company’s Northeast division. He has more than 27 years of experience in the construction industry.

Reuben D. Wilson has been promoted from technical sales representative to marketing manager for the performance chemicals business unit of Cytec Industries Inc. He will manage the development of new markets, commercialize new applications and lead new-product launches. He earned an M.S. in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford.

Five new trustees have been elected to the University of Bridgeport: Nicholas A. Panuzio, former Bridgeport mayor; Dorothy Larson, a founder of the Easton Community Center; real estate developer Walter Baum; Pierre Tardy, president of Christian Bernard Stores Corp.; and Frank I. Grow III, director of Noticias Panamerica Corp., which publishes Tiempos del Mondo.

Quinnipiac University has named Angela Mattie assistant professor of management in the School of Business, and Mary Helming assistant professor of nursing in the School of Health Sciences. Mattie served as vice president of performance improvement for the Sisters of Providence Health Care System in Springfield, Mass. Helming has taught classes at Quinnipiac for three years.

Arnulf Grubler, a professor in the field of energy and technology, will join the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental studies in January. He will also serve as a senior research scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Grubler has been lead author for the Second and Third Assessment Reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and is editor and lead author of the joint IIASA-World Energy Council study on Global Energy Perspectives.

Jeffrey M. Leavenworth, P.E. has joined Fletcher Thompson as electrical chief of the engineering practice group. He has more than 30 years’ experience in engineering, design and construction documentation. Leavenworth earned his master’s of science systems management from the University of Southern California.

Mark Carleson has been promoted to vice president of information technology at People’s Bank. Carleson has managed several development initiatives, including credit cards call center application and People’s online banking and trading sites. He will be responsible for all application development and determining the direction of the bank’s retail customer information and transaction processing system.

Essex Savings Bank has promoted Donald S. Beckwith of North Haven to senior vice president and chief lending officer; Lynn K. Giroux of Ivoryton to senior vice president of administration; and Shawn P. Honan, CPA, of Westbrook to senior vice president, treasurer and chief financial officer.

Sajida Farooqui has been named residential sales agent for Calcagni Associates’ North Haven office. She has more than ten years’ experience in real estate and owned a real estate consulting office in India.

Roth & Moore Architects in New Haven has announced the promotion of three staff architects to associates at the firm: Barbara Fabiani, AIA, Linda Reeder, AIA and Torin Thurston, AIA.

Raju Sinha has joined William Orange Realty as a full-time Realtor. A graduate of the University of Bombay in India, he was previously an international economist for a New York firm. Sinha has also written for both business and daily publications on economic and financial issues.

Lisa M. Burns has been appointed assistant professor of media studies at Quinnipiac University where she teaches media history and introduction to media communications. She has presented papers at national conferences and participated in the 2001 National Communication Association Doctoral Honors Conference. Burns contributed a chapter titled "A Forgotten First Lady: A Rhetorical Reassessment of Ellen Axson Wilson" to Inventing Their Voices: The Rhetoric of American First Ladies of the Twentieth Century. She is a former journalist and worked as a reporter, producer and anchor at WDUQ 90.5 FM and KQV 1410 AM both in Pittsburgh. Burns earned her M.A. in Rhetoric and Philosophy of Communication from Duquesne University.
