ANSONIA - Ansonia Copper & Brass Co. workers returned to their jobs October 20 after employees approved a five-year contract the previous day. Some 150 members of United Steelworkers of America Local 6445 had been walking the picket line since September 15, after contract bargaining stalled over wages and benefits.
The contract includes yearly salary increases between 2 and 4.5 percent, improvements to retirement, life insurance and accident benefits along with employee co-payments for health insurance, the company said. Founded in 1845 (and responsible in large part for Ansonia's one-time nickname of the "Copper City"), AC&B manufactures and tests more than 70 alloys for worldwide customers. Among its products are specialized metals for submarine construction.
