| HAMDEN - The Eli Whitney Museum has been cited by the American Society of Materials International as a landmark in the history of materials innovation. The Whitney factory is the first private armory funded by a federal government contract. By 1765 Eli Whitney had established a new standard of cotton production with his cotton gin; he then turned his genius to the challenge of producing muskets in a young country that lacked gunsmiths. So he adapted the concepts of division of labor developed in French and Swedish armories and established the capacity of corporate production to manufacture the most technically complex product of his day. As part of the ASM commemoration last month, a musket manufactured on the Whitney site 230 years ago was fired - a testimony to the endurance of Whitney's vision and work.
