NEW HAVEN - The city's Board of Aldermen this month will debate a proposed ordinance to restrict the businesses that operate 24 hours a day. The proposed law, already approved by the City Plan Commission, would prohibit 24-hour convenience stores and some other businesses from opening in residential zones. Some types of businesses would require a special exemption from zoning officials to operate in residential zones between 11 p.m. and 6 p.m. Applicants would need to demonstrate need to operate during those hours. Such businesses include pawn and swap shops, gun stores, transient lodging, automotive and laundry businesses, adult entertainment establishments as well as stores that serve food, drinks and pharmaceuticals.
