Keith Woodward, associate director of facilities at Quinnipiac University, has been elected vice president of technology and communications for the Eastern Region of the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers. He will chair the technology and communications committee, manage the association's Web site and oversee publication of its newsletter.
Gov. John G. Rowland has named physician J. Robert Galvin of Glastonbury commissioner of the state's Department of Public Health. A retired U.S. Army brigadier general, Galvin is an attending physician at Hartford Hospital with a private practice in Glastonbury. He also is an assistant clinical professor of family practice medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He is certified in aerospace medicine and is a senior examiner with the Federal Aviation Administration. Galvin received a Bronze Star and Army Commendation medal for his service in the Vietnam War and the Legion of Merit award upon retiring from the Army in 1991. He earned his medical degree from Tufts University and a master's degree in public health from UConn.
Yale University chemistry professor William Jorgensen has been named editor of the Journal of Chemical Information & Computer Science, published by the American Chemical Society. Jorgensen was a chemistry professor at Purdue from 1975-90 before his appointment as Conkey P. Whitehead Professor of Chemistry at Yale. Jorgensen has been editor of the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry since 2001 and editor of the Journal of Computational Chemistry since 2002. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard.
Hoyte Brown, president of Creative Financial Planning Corp., has been appointed co-chairperson of Saint Raphael's Presidents' Circle campaign. He will be responsible for setting the committee's objectives, increasing circle membership and event planning. Brown has been a director of the Saint Raphael Foundation since 2002. He is the former mayor of North Branford and served as state representative for the 86th House district.
Connecticut United for Research Excellence (CURE) has elected co-chairs representing members from among the state's pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Peter R. Farina, vice president for development at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Kevin Rakin, president and CEO of Genaissance Pharmaceuticals Inc., will serve two-year terms.
Peter G. Helie, president and CEO of Prudential Connecticut Realty, was elected director of the Realty Alliance. He created the Vision Group and was named Broker of the Year in 2001 by the Prudential Real Estate affiliates. The alliance is a group comprising 50 of the nation's top real-estate firms.
New Havener Margarita Diaz has been appointed assistant professor of communications at Quinnipiac University. She will teach "Introduction to News Writing" and serve as the advisor to the Quinnipiac Chronicle, the student newspaper. Diaz was one of the founding editors of the New York-based El Daily News and worked as an entertainment editor and writer for the New York Daily News.
Robert Glidden has been promoted to operations/maintenance manager at Cytec Industries' Wallingford facility. He will be responsible for managing production at the coatings and performance products manufacturing plant and the site's maintenance activities. Glidden has been with the company for 37 years and served in positions including pipe mechanic, air condition mechanic and operations superintendent.
Christopher R. Zell has been named senior team leader of the Connecticut Healthcare & Institutions Group for the Business Financial Services unit of FleetBoston Financial. He will be responsible for providing banking and financial services and products to health-care providers, education institutions and not-for-profit organizations.
Gary L. Doyens, account executive with Connecticut Public Television and Radio; Linda Greengas, a development/public relations consultant; and attorney Marilyn N. Toland, partner in the law firm of Tinley, Nastri, Renehan & Dost, LP have been elected to the board of directors for Christian Community Action Inc. (CCA). CCA is a non-profit ecumenical social-services agency providing emergency and transitional housing, food and support to homeless families in New Haven.
Colliers Dow & Condon has hired Frederick P. Petrella, CCIM and Peter S. Shiue to work in the firm's New Haven office. Petrella has worked in commercial real estate since 1984 and was elected president of the Connecticut CCIM chapter in 2003. Shiue was director of research at Farley Whitter Partners and worked as a broker. He is an MBA candidate in real estate finance from the University of Connecticut.
Vicki Todd has been named assistant professor of public relations and media studies in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University. She taught advertising and public relations at Texas Tech University. Todd earned her Ed.D. from Texas Tech University.
The 2003 New Haven Savings Bank Teacher Excellence Award has been awarded to Patrice Edwards and Alyssa Lockwood, L.W. Beecher Elementary School; Sandra Hulk, Urban Youth Middle School; and Wanda Velez, Nathan Hale School. The award recognizes teachers who have exhibited commitment to building student relationships and achievement.
WTNH-TV in New Haven has hired Bob Wilson as a reporter. He previously worked for NBC affiliate WVIT-TV. He also worked on specials for the Discovery Channel and freelance for WPRI-TV in Providence, R.I. He is a six-time Emmy Award nominee whose work has won "Best Feature Story" and "Best Breaking News Story" from the Connecticut Broadcasters Association.
