From dieting to spending, most New Year's resolutions are broken within days, if not minutes. But on December 29 the city of New Haven and the town of Westport announced an unbreakable resolution - to "green" their energy consumption in 2004.
By purchasing renewable energy certificates from New England Small Hydro facilities, New Haven and Westport will be supporting local businesses while minimizing their own impact on the environment.
A binding resolution enacted by the New Haven Board Of Aldermen last summer commits New Haven to obtaining 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2010. According to city officials, the new commitment is the first step toward that goal.
"It's a wonderful start to the New Year for our city, our state and our environment," said Mayor John DeStefano Jr. "Not only is it the right thing to do for our community, but it is also easy and fast to implement."
Meanwhile, the town of Westport will be "greening" 100 percent of its energy consumption at Westport Town Hall for the month of January. Explained First Selectwoman Diane Goss Farrell: "We care about our community and the environment. We are not required to buy green power, we are choosing to."
On New Year's Day, New Haven and Westport continued to purchase electricity from their regular suppliers. EAD Environmental's renewable-energy certificates represent the proof that green power has been generated. The towns' purchases subsidize the slightly higher cost of the production of energy from renewable sources.
According to Samantha Unger, EAD Environmental's vice president of marketing: "Through their support of renewable energy, New Haven and Westport are sending a simple message to their communities: 1) We can create a healthier and safer environment; and 2) We hope you make the same choice. Do the right thing: Support renewable energy."
