Edward Kwasnik, M.D. has been elected to a six-year term as the New England Surgical Society's executive committee Connecticut representative. He has been director of surgery at Waterbury Hospital since 1993. Kwasnik is also director of the surgical residency program at the hospital and an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

State Rep. James R. Amann (D-118) of Milford has joined the staff of the greater Connecticut chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He will be involved in chapter development and community awareness.

Craig Mittleman, M.D., director of emergency services at Waterbury Hospital, has been elected president of the Connecticut Chapter of American College Physicians. Previously Mittleman was an attending physician in the Norwalk Hospital emergency department. He is a graduate of the Utah School of Medicine.

Daneen Richards has been named executive director of the American Diabetes Association's (ADA) Connecticut and western Massachusetts chapter. She has been working for ADA for 15 years. Richards coordinated programs and fundraising in southern California before relocating to the ADA's San Francisco Bay/Silicon Valley area, where she was promoted to executive director.

Michael Minutoli has been appointed assistant director of career programs in the career services department at Quinnipiac University. He will provide career counseling to undergraduate students and alumni and organize the university's annual career fair and alumni networking receptions. Minutoli earned his master's degree in human resource development at Clemson University.

Daniel J. Courcey III has been named executive director of development and alumni affairs at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford. He has held senior development positions at the University of Vermont, the Hotchkiss School and St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H.

Sigma Xi, a national scientific interdisciplinary research society, has reelected Quinnipiac University professor Albert Notation to a three-year term as associate director of the Northeast region. Notation earned his doctorate in organic chemistry from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.

Peter D. Ottavio, P.E. has joined Fletcher Thompson Inc. as principal in the engineering practice group. He has more than 30 years of varied mechanical engineering and project management experience. Ottavio is licensed in 11 states and is professionally affiliated with the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and the American Society of Heating Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers.

Al Mossa has been appointed vice president of technical services of IntelliBridge LLC in Milford. He will lead the company's Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 Initiative. Moss was chief technology officer at Best Friends Pet Care in Norwalk. He holds an MBA from Sacred Heart University.

The Connecticut Fund for the Environment (CFE) has named Charles J. Rothenberger a legal fellow and Roger Reynolds staff attorney. Rothenberger was previously employed as a law clerk for the Connecticut Appellate Court in Hartford. He has been admitted to the Connecticut and Massachusetts bar. Reynolds litigated environmental, consumer protection and antitrust matters in the attorney general's office.

The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury has appointed Kejll M. Wangensteen director of development. He will manage the contributed income and fundraising. Wangensteen previously worked as a researcher and grant writer for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Walker Art Center in Minnesota.

Scillia Dowling & Nater Advisors, LLC has announced the appointment of Heather Lucas and Frank Hammell as staff accountants. Lucas earned her B.S. in accounting from Quinnipiac University. Hammell is a graduate of Bryant College in Smithfield, R.I.

The Milford Bar Association (MBA) elected Robert Kapusta, president; Robert Chesson, vice president; Michael Kerin, secretary; Richard Qatato, treasurer; Paul Lewis Otzel, executive secretary; Peter Stark, immediate past president and Margarita Moore, director. Officers and directors were installed at MBA's annual membership lunch meeting in November.

The Bridgeport Holiday Inn Hotel & Conference Center has named Scott Ragatz general manager. Ragatz worked at the Stamford Marriot, the Norwalk Doubletree Club Hotel and the Norwalk Courtyard by Marriot.

The state's Department of Labor has recognized Irvin Leining Jr. of Durham for 30 years of service. Area employees recognized for 25 years of service include Jacqueline Blount, Hamden Call Center; Annette Clark, Waterbury Adjudications; Mary Clayton, Hamden Job Center; Katherine Foley of Middletown; Mark Girardi, Hamden Field Audit; David Hoffman, Bridgeport Business Services Unit; William Pelletier and Robert Ryan, Waterbury Field Audit; Richard Przekopski of Middlefield; Karen Schumaker, Bridgeport Appeals; and Teresa Woodsome, Waterbury Job Center. Area employees honored for 20 years are Jocelyn Carter, Hamden Call Center; Howard Chernikoff, Hamden Job Center; Laurie Codianne of Prospect; and Victoria Galimitakis of Deep River.

The Educational Trust Fund of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants has named Charlene B. Labate recipient of its 2003 Candidate's Award. She is currently enrolled in the MBA program at the University of New Haven. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and has received the Danny Washington Scholarship for academic achievement and community leadership. The award provides $2,500 to assist college graduates in meeting educational requirements to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination.

H. Pearce Real Estate Co. has named James Filley and Alicja Jedrzejewski residential sales associates. Filley, who joined the company's Branford office, has more than 17 years' experience in owning a company and specializes in home improvement. Jedrzejewski, who joined the company's New Haven office, worked for Sterling Memorial Library and the Yale Law School Library.
