STRATFORD - Sikorsky Aircraft, in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, has won two U.S. Navy helicopter contracts worth $840 million. Although Lockheed Martin's Owego, N.Y., plant expects to add 300 jobs over the next year, a Sikorsky spokesman said it would be "premature" to estimate the pact's job impact in Stratford. The spokesman acknowledged that the contract, especially a $417 million deal for support services for Navy variations of the Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopter, was "good news for Sikorsky."
Maritime Helicopter Support Co., a joint venture formed between Lockheed Martin Systems Integration and Sikorsky, was awarded the contract for logistics support, which involves providing parts to keep the Navy's fleet of 540 variants of the Black Hawk running. Seventy percent of the work will be performed in Stratford and 30 percent in Owego, and the contract is expected to be completed in December 2008, according to the Navy.
