FARMINGTON - HMO ConnectiCare has purchased AmeriHealth Health Plan Inc., a New York HMO subsidiary of AmeriHealth Inc. The purchase, which became effective January 1, marks a major step in ConnectiCare's plan to expand regionally into lower Hudson New York.
Through the acquisition of AmeriHealth, ConnectiCare will gain access to four neighboring New York state counties - Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Rockland. ConnectiCare is the third-largest HMO in Connecticut, with additional membership in three adjacent Massachusetts counties that span north to the Vermont border. With the closing of this transaction, ConnectiCare has added in excess of 1,000 new providers and 23 hospitals to its network of 10,000 physicians and 39 acute-care hospitals.
"With the AmeriHealth acquisition, ConnectiCare can now offer a network of New York providers to its customers in Fairfield County," said Paul Philpott, ConnectiCare's chief marketing officer and senior vice president. "We are also developing strategies to enroll new employer groups in the New York market, all of which will play a major role in ConnectiCare's long term growth plans." ConnectiCare is an independent Connecticut-based managed care company serving roughly 280,000 members through its affiliates, ConnectiCare Inc., ConnectiCare of Massachusetts Inc. and ConnectiCare Insurance Co. Inc.
