World Energy Alternatives, LLC, a supplier of biodiesel, biodiesel blends and other biofuels, has opened Connecticut's first biodiesel commercial fueling station.
Buckley Energy will supply World Energy's biodiesel to Santa Energy at 670 Grasso Boulevard in New Haven. Santa Fleet Services will make available to its commercial customers B20, a blend of 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent petroleum diesel.
Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable fuel refined from renewable sources such as soybean oil, grown in the U.S.
In addition to its renewable content, biodiesel also significantly reduces emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a technical report of biodiesel emissions data that shows the exhaust emissions of particulate matter from pure biodiesel are about 47 percent lower than overall particulate matter emissions from diesel.
Breathing particulate has been shown to be a human health hazard. Biodiesel emissions also reduce by 80 to 90 percent potential cancer causing compounds called Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrated PAH. Biodiesel also reduces emissions of total unburned hydrocarbons, a contributing factor to smog and ozone, by about 68 percent.
In addition to its emissions benefits, biodiesel has higher lubricity than standard petroleum diesel. This can help engines run longer, cleaner, and smoother.
The biodiesel market has doubled in size annually in recent years and, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, biodiesel is the nation's fastest-growing form of alternative energy. There are presently about 150 retail stations nationwide, with more becoming operational every month.
"Key World Energy Distributors like Santa Energy will continue to be an integral part of helping World Energy drive the biodiesel market forward," said Gene Gebolys, president of World Energy.
Based in Bridgeport, Santa Energy Inc. is the parent company of Santa Fleet Services, provides commercial motor fuels to fleets through out Fairfield and New Haven counties. Santa's fleet stations, the company says, are the first in Connecticut to be unattended cardlock fueling stations and are now the first to offer biodiesel (B20).
