Cheshire Direct to Shed Jobs

CHESHIRE - Cheshire Direct, which handles shipping and customer service for Macys.com and Bloomingdale's By Mail, will cut 156 jobs this spring, including 148 hourly and eight managerial employees. The positions will be relocated to call centers in Arizona and Ohio, according to Ohio-based Federated Department Stores Inc., which owns the 390,000-square-foot Knottier Drive facility. Scheduled to become effective between March 20 and April 2, the layoffs will reduce the mail-order center's workforce to some 300.
Cheshire Direct was founded as Bloomingdale's By Mail in 1987. At the height of the Internet boom in 1999, the company employed more than 700 workers. Today about 450 employees work there.
