Editorial: And the Winners Are...

The congratulations go out to the winners of out nine annual "Business & Civic Awards," whose exploits are chronicled in these pages.
Our admiration goes out to all of them who, through excellence, innovation, creativity and even (in a few cases) old-fashioned rat-like cunning have made a go of it and succeeded handsomely in bewildering economic times.
Now, the explanation: Just as Time magazine chose U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan as its 2003 "Person [singular] of the Year" (an award formerly called "Man of the Year" - sign of a changing time), Business New Haven's Businessperson (also singular) of the Year is likewise a group of entrepreneurs, and not just one: the restaurateurs, old and new, who have provided the fuel, culinary and otherwise, for downtown New Haven's revival.
There are so many it would be nearly impossible to speak to or photograph them all. But all are winners - as are the rest of us for having them in our midst.
