NEW HAVEN - The new independent Northeast League baseball team that will begin play at Yale Field in May finally has a name: the New Haven County Cutters. As in...stone cutters (see the movie Breaking Away)? Nope. According to the club, it is supposed to refer either to a Coast Guard vessel over 65 feet in length (New Haven has a Coast Guard station - get it?) or a "cut" fastball, such as the pitch that has been so successful for New York Yankees bullpen ace Mario Rivera. As for the inelegant name, club president Rick Handelman explains, "We want everyone from Milford to Madison and north to Waterbury and Meriden to feel a part of this team." Next on the team marketing agenda: colors, a logo, mascot, uniforms.
