STRATFORD - Sikorsky Aircraft has been awarded a $40 million Pentagon contract to continue work on retooling the U.S. Army's fleet of Black Hawk helicopters. The Stratford manufacturer is expected to convert four UH-60A model Black Hawks into the latest UH-60M models, complete with digital cockpits and other upgrades by the end of 2006. The Army is looking to upgrade up to 1,200 existing Black Hawks and purchase 300 new production UH-60M models over the next 25 years. In May 2001, the Pentagon awarded a $220 million contract to Sikorsky to produce four prototype UH-60Ms, converting three older models and one production model from scratch. The Pentagon also recently exercised an option on a $14.3 million contract to have Sikorsky Support Services provide maintenance for Navy helicopters in Nevada and Arizona for the next year.
