MERIDEN - The Meriden Planning Commission voted unanimously February 11 to allow electronics retailer Best Buy to occupy 35,000 square feet in the 53,400-square-foot former A&P Super FoodMart grocery store on Chamberlain Highway. The property's developer, SEA Meriden, is negotiating with potential tenants to share the remainder of the building, in addition to a 3,000-square-foot building at the rear of the six-acre parcel. Representatives for the developer were told in January that they needed to move two bay doors from the front of the building to the side. The bays were needed to allow employees to install car stereos and other devices. They were also asked to reduce the size of the yellow-and-navy Best Buy sign to below the roofline. SEA's architect raised the roof and accomplished both, and as a result received the green light for the project. Best Buy is expected to open at the site by the end of 2004.
