Professor Leonard Engel, chairman of Quinnipiac University's Department of English, has been elected to the Connecticut Academy of Arts & Sciences for the work he accomplished during his 40 years at QU. Engel co-wrote the introductions, wrote essays and edited the books Sam Peckinpah's West: New Perspectives and The Big Empty: Essays on the Land as Narrative. He received QU's Outstanding Faculty Award in 1990. Engel earned his doctorate in English from Fordham University in 1977.
St. Vincent's Medical Center and St. Vincent's Health Services in Bridgeport have named Susan L. Davis president and chief executive officer. She previously worked for Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for 18 years including as chief operating officer and her most recent position as president and CEO. Davis earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Mount St. Mary College in Newburgh, N.Y. and a master's in nursing administration and doctorate from Columbia University.
Paulette Mebane, BSN, RN, has been elected president of the southern Connecticut chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). A member of the organization for 12 years, Mebane serves on the national level of the association's membership and has been a delegate to the national conference for three years. She is a clinical coordinator of the Nathan Smith Clinic at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
David Donnelly has been named dean of Quinnipiac University's (QU) School of Communications. He served as interim dean of the school during the fall semester. Donnelly came to QU as associate dean in the School of Communications in 2002 from the University of Houston, where he was an associate professor of communications for ten years and director of the International Telecommunications Research Institute. He earned his doctorate and master's degree in mass communications from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Robert W. Makuch, professor of public health in the biostatistics division in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health at Yale University, has been named a fellow of the American Statistical Association. Makuch was cited for his contributions to the methodological design and analysis of clinical trials and his administration of an academic biostatistics division. Makuch also trains students in clinical trials both nationally and internationally.
Edward F. Godin Jr. has joined Matthews Commercial Properties, LLC of Waterbury as partner. He is a licensed broker with 15 years of industrial and commercial real estate experience. Godin's past clients include B.F. Goodrich, UPS and Sovereign Bank.
Vollmer Associates, LLP, an engineering, architecture and planning firm, has named Gary Sorge, LA, AICP, senior associate and John F. Eberle, PE, principal professional. Sorge is branch manager of the firm's Hamden office. He earned his BS in landscape architecture from Rutgers University's Cook College. Sorge is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Norwalk Conservation Commission and the American Planning Association. Eberle has 18 years' experience in civil engineering and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He earned his BS in civil engineering from Syracuse University.
John Saville has joined Servpro as a sales and marketing manager in the company's North Haven facility. He is president and CEO of John Saville Entertainment & Promotions. Saville is a member of organizations including the Guilford Rotary Club, Business Networking International and Guilford Interfaith Ministries.
The Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce has named Susan Rapini insurance program coordinator and Ronald J. Fasone Jr. accounting/personnel manager. Rapini will be responsible for introducing members to insurance programs the chamber offers as well as working with affiliate insurance agencies. She is the former executive director of the Hamden Chamber of Commerce. Fasone worked as a staff accountant at Case Paper Inc. in New York.
Michael M. Deren, M.D. has been named a director of Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford. He is a senior surgeon in thoracic surgery at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London and William Backus Hospital in Norwich. Deren also serves as a consultant in thoracic surgery to Norwich State Hospital. He is board-certified in thoracic surgery and is a member of the American Medical Association, the Connecticut State Medical Society, the Connecticut Society of American Board of Surgeons and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Deren earned his M.D. from Georgetown University.
Pilot Pen Tennis has named Jeff Toler sales manager and hired Sarah Willcox as assistant ticket manager. Toler recently served as the director of sports marketing for the Coastal Fairfield County Convention & Visitors Bureau. He also worked as a tourism and sports sales representative for the Greater New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau. Toler's role will include sales of corporate boxes and hospitality suites. Willcox has served as a ticket supervisor for two summers. Her responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day operations of the ticket office and supporting ticket marketing. She is a graduate of Connecticut College.
Yale-New Haven Hospital has promoted Alice Lewis, RN, BSN, to assistant manager/coordinator in the Resource Support Unit. She will be responsible for managing the patient care associates, nurse orientation and daily staffing throughout the hospital. She worked for 15 years on the General Medicine/Pulmonary Unit. Lewis is a graduate of Bethune-Cookman College.
Alice Schwartz of New Haven has joined Press/Cuozzo Realtors as a sales associate. She is past president of Women in Arts, has worked at the Arts Council of Greater New Haven and is currently secretary/treasurer of the Charles Schwartz Foundation for Music.
Tahiry Sanchez, RN is the new manager of the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH). An employee of the hospital since 1976, Sanchez earned her master's degree from Southern Connecticut State University. The GCRC is an inpatient and outpatient unit for adult and pediatric research.
