NEW HAVEN - Modeled after a similar ordinance that became law in Bridgeport, some Elm City lawmakers want to license residential landlords and make their properties subject to regular inspections.
The controversial proposal, which has prompted opposition from a number of prominent city property-owners, would charge an annual licensing fee of $50 plus $10 for each housing unit. According to published reports, as many as 30,000 of the city's 55,000 housing units might be impacted, with licensing fees generating as much as $1 million in revenues to the city each year.
Proponents of the measure, which has yet to be scheduled for a hearing before the Board of Aldermen, say its passage would discourage illegal apartments and deter bad landlords from allowing properties to fall into disrepair.
