CVB Promotes African-American Tourism

New brochure highlights cultural, sports attractions

NEW HAVEN - The Greater New Haven Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) has published the first African American Visitor's Guide to Greater New Haven. The 12-panel brochure, sponsored by Yale University, celebrates the region's African-American cultural heritage and historic legacy.

"The Greater New Haven area has a wealth of African American history and culture to share with travelers," said Karolyn Kirchgesler, executive director of the New Haven CVB. Kirchgesler noted that in 2001 the Travel Industry Association of American (TIA) reported that African-American travel volume increased 16 percent.

Kirchgesler portrays this as an opportunity to invite this emerging travel market segment to Greater New Haven.

Also according to the TIA:

o African-American buying power will increase 32 percent over the next five years, from $645.9 billion in 2002 to $852.8 billion in 2007.

o Currently $4.6 billion is spent annually by African-Americans on transportation, travel and lodging.

o In general, African Americans are not impulse buyers, but want a lot of information first.

o Blacks' spiritual heritage dominates family values, culture and beliefs, and impacts the travel choices of African-Americans.

Highlights of the CVB brochure include photos of tourist attractions such as the Amistad Memorial and Freedom Schooner Amistad, as well as listings of museums in Hartford and Waterbury.

Annual events like Martin Luther King Day at Yale's Peabody Museum of Natural History and the Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament are featured, along with an array of popular ethnic restaurants and entertainment options. A timeline demonstrates the growth and development of greater New Haven's African American community.

At a March 1 press conference to unveil the brochure, Kirchgesler was joined by New Have Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and Yale University Vice President Bruce Alexander.
