Gov. John G. Rowland visited Southern Connecticut State University February 26 to dedicate the school's new Energy Center.
The state-of-the-art, 16,580-square-foot facility was designed to improve campus-wide energy efficiency, ensure compliance with increasingly strict environmental standards and meet SCSU's escalating energy needs.
The $24.8 million facility is part of a $260 million building program - largest in the school's 110-year history. This includes additions to Buley Library and Engleman Hall, the main academic building, as well as a new student center three times the size of its predecessor.
The Energy Center replaces a 54-year-old power plant that used 1,000 gallons of fuel per day more than its successor.
According to Robert Sheeley, SCSU's associate vice president for capital budgeting and facilities operations, the university is now saving at least $28,000 per month on heating fuel as a result of the new facility, which took 18 months to construct.
In 2003 the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cited SCSU for its commitment and ability to control escalating energy costs.
