UNH Gets Its Man

'Scholar and manager' Kaplan to success DeNardis July 1

The University of New Haven introduced its sixth president March 10: Steven Kaplan, chancellor of the University of Virginia's College at Wise (Va.). Kaplan will assume his new post July 1.

Kaplan replaces Lawrence J. DeNardis, who has held the post since 1990.

Kaplan was chosen from among 100 candidates for the president's job. According to UNH board Chairman Robert Alvine, "Dr. Kaplan will inspire, guide and cause UNH to meet its wonderful destiny."

Kaplan has been chancellor of UVa-Wise since 2001. Before that he served as dean of arts and sciences at SUNY College at Buffalo (N.Y.), and as dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Butler University.

A UCLA graduate, Kaplan earned both his master's and Ph.D. (in comparative literature) degrees at Eberhard-Karls Universitat in Germany.

Alvine characterized Kaplan as "an excellent teacher and scholar. He is an accomplished executive and manager, with a thoroughly proven record of excellence. He is a person who embodies the principles and values of the University of New Haven; admired - in fact, revered - by those he served and those with whom he served.

A father of four and husband of a German-born teacher and artist, Kaplan has authored and edited numerous scholarly publications and written three books.

"I feel an incredible affinity with this institution," Kaplan said. "My professional career has been based on a simple assumption: that my life gains meaning with the number of lives I can enrich."

He added that the private institution's most urgent need was to "improve the so-called bottom line through strong financial management and fundraising.

"The university needs to significantly increase its endowment for named scholarships and faculty chairs, for facilities and for general support for academic programs."

Added Kaplan: "Some people enjoy making money because of what they can do for others. I enjoy raising money for the same reason."

Founded in 1920 as New Haven College, UNH today offers 80 undergrad and graduate programs to a 4,500-member student body.
