HARTFORD - Union membership in Connecticut continues its uneven but downward slide, according to the most recent figures from the state's Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2001, 15.8 percent of wage and salary workers in the state were union members - down from the 16.3-percent figure posted in 2000 - representing a drop from 246,000 to 237,000 employees. That still outstrips the national rate of 13.5 percent, ranking Connecticut 16th in its unionization rate among the 50 states and D.C..
The decline of unionization mirrors the decline of auto, steel, textiles and other manufacturing industries beginning in the late 1970s. In addition, anti-union legislation, automation and the rise of the global economy have all played a role in falling union membership. Connecticut's rate of decline has outpaced the national average due to a higher concentration of manufacturing industries compared with the nation as a whole.
