The Connecticut Hospital Association (CHA) has launched a new Healthcare Workforce section of its Web site last month, as well as numerous collaborative initiatives with educators, state agencies and other health-care partners. The focus of the plan reflects the need for involvement on many fronts to close the widening gap between demand and health-care workforce supply.
CHA has paralleled many of the same issues that have occupied the American Hospital Association's (AHA) Commission on Workforce. Randolph Reinhold, M.D., of the Hospital of Saint Raphael presented the five themes developed by AHA to address to address the workforce shortage at the CHA Ad Hoc Committee meeting in September. These themes are: broadening the base of potential workers; deepening hospitals' partnership with their own employees; teaming up with schools and industries; redesigning work to improve productivity; and promoting societal support of health care as a career choice.
