STRATFORD - The House Appropriations Committee October 24 proposed purchasing 33 Sikorsky Black Hawk helicopters in the current fiscal year. The proposal represents an increase of eight helicopters over President George W. Bush's budget request and comes close to the 36 copters Sikorsky Aircraft officials say is needed to keep the company solvent.
The strong commitment to Sikorsky helicopters, Pratt & Whitney engines and Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace equipment will help ensure our military has the tools it needs to fight this new war, said Ruth Harkin, a senior vice president for government relations at United Technologies Corp., in a statement. Harkin also applauded Connecticut's congressional delegation for fighting for a strong national defense.
The defense-spending bill also would add $28.5 million to the Comanche helicopter program, bringing the total to $816 million for the budget year that started earlier this month. The Comanche is being developed jointly by Sikorsky and Boeing Corp. of Philadelphia.
